Enrichment is essential to a dog’s happiness and well-being. That’s why Holiday House Pet Resort & Training Center created a Canine Sensory Garden—a safe, engaging space designed to inspire curiosity, calm the mind, and encourage natural canine behaviors. From playful pups to wise seniors, every dog benefits from the chance to sniff, explore, and discover. It’s more than a walk in the garden—it’s a journey of the senses.
What Is a Canine Sensory Garden?
A canine sensory garden is a specially designed outdoor space created to stimulate your dog’s senses through scent, sight, sound, texture, and more. It’s not just your run-of-the-mill garden—it’s an immersive experience tailored for canine enrichment, curiosity, and calm.
At Holiday House Pet Resort & Training Center, the Canine Sensory Garden is a key feature of the Explorer dog daycare program, offering dogs the chance to engage their senses in a safe and natural environment.
Why Dogs Love the Sensory Garden
Whether your dog is shy, high-energy, or somewhere in between, a sensory garden has something for every personality and breed type:
- For the sniffers: Scent-driven breeds like Beagles, Bloodhounds, and Labs thrive with nose work, sniffing fresh herbs like sweet basil, sage, and thyme.
- For the curious: Explorers at heart—like Terriers and Spaniels—love discovering new paths, textures, and scents. For dogs that are a bit more hesitant to embark on discovery, a guided experience helps boost their confidence with new experiences.
- For the anxious or shy: Calm, quiet areas filled with soothing smells and gentle sounds provide relaxation and comfort—the perfect area for decompression walks.
- For the energetic: Interactive features offer healthy stimulation and a change of pace from high-energy play.
“You can see the difference in a dog’s energy before and after spending time in the sensory garden. First-timers may start with zoomies but quickly settle in. The dogs that are familiar with the experience get excited just heading in the direction of the garden. Afterward, the majority of the dogs are calm and relaxed leaving the garden experience,” says Lindsay Smith, activities coordinator for the Explorer daycare group, adding “It’s easy to see how much they love being in the sensory garden.”
Sensory Features Designed for Canine Enrichment
A canine sensory garden is more than just pretty petals—it’s a full experience for body and mind:
- Dog-safe flowers and herbs for nose work enrichment
- Pathways and textures for tactile exploration under paw
- Natural obstacles and hideaways to climb, jump, or just relax nearby
- Scent wall for nose-led adventures and mental engagement
Spring into Sensory Fun
After the April showers, our sensory garden blooms with life in May—perfect timing for outdoor enrichment. The dogs enrolled in the Explorer daycare program at the resort enjoy:
- Guided scent games using herbs and hidden treats
- Free time to roam and engage their natural curiosity
- Special events and seasonal enrichment tied to nature’s rhythm
The Explorer Program: Tailored for Adventurous Tails
The Explorer dog daycare program includes structured enrichment activities and sessions in the sensory garden. Dogs enjoy both social play and focused, individualized time exploring the garden’s features. It’s all part of providing a day that’s not just fun—but fulfilling.
