The experiences a puppy has during the first year of life help shape the dog they become. Positive socialization, new experiences, structured play, and gentle guidance all contribute to boosting puppy confidence, developing communication skills, and creating a well-adjusted companion.
That’s exactly what the Daycare Scouts program at Holiday House Pet Resort & Training Center was designed to do. Created exclusively for puppies up to one year of age, Daycare Scouts bridges the gap between early puppy socialization and the larger dog daycare program.
Rather than immediately joining a dog daycare group, puppies in the Daycare Scouts program are introduced to new environments, different playmates, and age-appropriate activities in a carefully supervised small-group setting. The Daycare Scouts program provides young dogs with the opportunity to build confidence at their own pace while enjoying enriching activities, learning appropriate play skills, and forming positive relationships with both people and other dogs.
More Than Playtime
Play is an important part of puppyhood, but purposeful enrichment makes the experience even more valuable. The goal of the Daycare Scouts program is to create positive experiences that support the fundamentals of healthy physical, emotional, and cognitive development. Every Daycare Scouts program follows the same core foundation while seasonal themes keep each session fresh, engaging, and fun.
“We have many puppies that enroll in a second Scouts session. The puppies visibly love playing with friends from a previous session and are genuinely excited about the activities. The parents notice the positive change in their puppy after the first session and enroll again,” said daycare manager Ro Riley.
Throughout the 8-week program, experienced daycare teachers guide puppies through a balanced schedule of supervised play, confidence-building activities, sensory exploration, problem-solving games, and appropriate rest.
Each weekly class builds on the life skill learned the prior week by adding another element. The repetition and the new experience work in tandem to reinforce the positive experience and mastery of the skill.
Boosting Puppy Confidence
Whether puppies are navigating an obstacle course, exploring new sights, sounds, textures, and scents, working through food puzzles, or practicing polite social skills with other dogs, every activity has a purpose. The goal is to build confidence, encourage curiosity, strengthen communication skills, and create positive learning experiences that prepare puppies for success in a larger daycare environment and everyday life.
“The winter and summer sessions provide different opportunities for the puppies to have new experiences because the activities match the season. Unlike winter, summer allows us to do more outside and use the wading pools,” said Riley, adding” Creating activities based on a seasonal theme that teach the same fundamentals is an exciting challenge for our team.”
Every Puppy’s Journey is Different
No two puppies begin Daycare Scouts at the same place—and that’s exactly what makes watching their progress so rewarding.
Zoey
Zoey, a Pug, joined Scouts Winter Camp as a friendly, confident puppy who loved people but was hesitant around other dogs. According to Ro, Zoey, at first, watched the other puppies playing and clearly wanted to join them but wasn’t quite sure how. Through guided group play, confidence-building activities, and positive social experiences, Zoey learned how to approach other puppies, initiate play, and build friendships. By the end of the program, she had blossomed into an eager participant who confidently inserted herself into group play instead of waiting for others to invite her. This summer, she’s back for another Scouts adventure along with her best friend Poppy, a Yorkie mix.
Blaze

Blaze, a 115-pound Great Dane puppy, joined Scouts Summer Camp after participating in the resort’s Puppy Social Hour. While he’s always enjoyed being around other dogs, Scouts is helping him develop an equally important skill—learning how to play appropriately with friends that are much smaller than he is. Through supervised interactions and gentle guidance, Blaze is learning to read other dogs’ body language, respect their play boundaries, and adjust his play style to match his new friends.
Some puppies arrive with endless enthusiasm and very little self-control. They want to play constantly, often becoming so excited that they struggle to recognize when another puppy needs a break. Through structured activities and teacher-guided interactions, these energetic puppies learn to pause, refocus, regulate their excitement, and return to play more thoughtfully.
Whether a puppy needs more confidence, better social skills, improved impulse control, or simply more experience interacting with dogs of different breeds, sizes, personalities, and play styles, every Scout follows their own path. One of the most rewarding parts of the program is watching those small weekly victories grow into lasting confidence and social success by the end of the eight-week journey.
“The creativity and effort that went into Winter Scouts Camp were truly remarkable…We were especially delighted to receive the passport documenting all of the adventures and accomplishments throughout scout camp. Seeing photos of Zoey participating in the various activities made it clear how much thought, planning, and enthusiasm your team invested in creating a memorable experience for every dog,” wrote Zoey’s parents Jenifer and Chuck in a letter to Holiday House Pet Resort.
Training: A Natural Next Step
Confidence, social skills, and enrichment create an excellent foundation for future training. Many Daycare Scouts graduates continue into the professional training programs at Holiday House Pet Resort, including the daycare-based Play & Learn program. By introducing puppies to learning in a positive environment early in life, families often find that future training becomes easier, more enjoyable, and more successful.
